You may have heard anecdotally that black cats and dogs have lower adoption rates than other cats and dogs in shelters and rescues, but "Black Cat syndrome" and "Black Dog Syndrome" is a real color bias phenomenon borne of superstition, myth, and portrayal in media, that causes black cats and dogs to be adopted at lower rates, and face higher euthanasia rates. We're a No-Kill rescue, so that last part doesn't apply to us, but we do notice when our perfectly loving and loyal black cats and dogs take longer to finder their forever homes.
Alexandria and Penelope are two of our adoptable black cats and dogs, and they will both make wonderful companions for the right family. Alexandria is a little on the shy side when she first meets someone, but with those she feels comfortable with, she's and absolute love, and likes to go for walks and get belly rubs! Penelope came in all by herself, so she didn't have siblings to give her comfort when she was a scared little kitten of just four weeks old, but with lots of hands on love and affection, she has come a long way, and now seeks out interaction with us!
If you're interested in meeting Alexandria or Penelope, or any of the other 100+ adoptable animals we have waiting to find their forever home (especially our black cats and dogs), please come in and get to know them! We're open Tuesday through Saturday, from 12:00pm to 4:00pm, and you do not need an appointment to meet our adoptable animals!
